While Time has yet to revise the pricing for its home fibre offering, the broadband provider has started rolling out a free speed boost for its existing home broadband customers starting last week. The free upgrade appears to be part of its loyalty programme running from 27th March until 7th April 2024.
Free speed upgrade up to 200Mbps
From the looks of it, existing 100Mbps Time Fibre Home customers are getting a double-speed upgrade to 200Mbps, while users on 300Mbps will get bumped up to 500Mbps. Meanwhile, 500Mbps customers are upgraded to 600Mbps. Customers can enjoy the new upgraded speeds without any changes to their monthly subscription fee and contract. On top of that, Time is also offering free router upgrade with a contract renewal.
Free device upgrade with contract renewal
According to the Time Fibre Home Promo terms and conditions, existing customers on the 200Mbps plan are eligible to get a WiFi 6 router (worth RM399) on a 24-month contract. Alternatively, they can get a free WiFi 6 router and a WiFi 6 Mesh Node if they upgrade to the higher 600Mbps or 1Gbps plans. Meanwhile, customers who choose to upgrade to the highest 2Gbps plan will get a 2Gbps WiFi 6 router (worth RM899).
The free router and mesh device redemption is available from 27th March until 30th June 2024. It is offered to existing Time Fibre Home customers who have completed a minimum 20-month subscription period under their current Time Fire Home Plan. It is mentioned that eligible customers with 600Mbps and 1Gbps plans who signed up for the FTTR package are not eligible for the free device redemption upon plan upgrade or contract renewal.
Eligible customer can choose to opt-in via Time’s self care portal or through Time’s authorised telemarketers during the campaign period.
At the moment, Time is offering 100Mbps for RM99/month while the 500Mbps plan is offered for RM139/month. If you want Gigabit speeds, the 1Gbps plan is going for RM199/month while the highest 2Gbps option is now going for RM379/month. As part of its current promo, customers can enjoy the first month’s subscription for free. In addition, new 500Mbps fbre customers can also enjoy a discounted monthly subscription fee of just RM99/month for the first 6 months.
Time has revamped its home fibre broadband offering after rolling out free speed boost and router upgrades to existing customers. Essentially, new customers are getting an additional 100Mbps at no extra cost.
Time offers 200Mbps for RM99/month
Time now offers 200Mbps for RM99/month and 600Mbps for RM139/month
The base 100Mbps Time home fibre broadband plan is now upgraded to 200Mbps while maintaining the same subscription fee of RM99/month. The plan also comes bundled with a free WiFi 6 router worth RM399 and offers symmetrical 200Mbps speeds for both upload and download.
If you need more speed, for an additional RM40 per month, you can subscribe to Time’s 600Mbps fibre plan at RM139/month. This plan comes bundled with a WiFi 6 router (worth RM399) and a free WiFi 6 Mesh (worth RM399) to expand your home’s WiFi footprint. In terms of speed, the plan offers 600Mbps for download, but a slightly lower 500Mbps for upload, which is still impressive for the price.
As part of its ongoing promo, customers who sign up for the 600Mbps plan will be charged RM99/month for the first 6 months. That’s extra savings of RM240 during the promo period before going back to RM139/month for the subsequent months in the contract.
The pricing for higher gigabit fibre plans such as 1Gbps and 2Gbps remain unchanged at RM199/month and RM379/month respectively. Both plans also get a WiFi 6 router and WiFi 6 Mesh bundle. In terms of upload speed, both plans are limited to 500Mbps. Take note that the 2Gbps fibre plan from Time offers true 2Gbps downloads but the plan is only available in selected areas.
Time offers no contract option but there’s a one-time fee
As usual, all fibre broadband plans come with a 24-month contract. However, Time is offering a no-contract option which requires a one-time charge of RM400 for the 200Mbps plan, RM650 for the 600Mbps plan and RM800 for the 1Gbps plan. If you need a landline, these plans also come with Time Voice Home Basic and the call usage is charged based on pay per use basis.
If you’re interested, you can sign up online via their website. New subscribers can enjoy the first month free under Time’s online exclusive offer.
[ UPDATE 6/06/2024 21:20 ] CelcomDigi has updated that its 1Gbps fibre plan offers 500Mbps upload.
===
CelcomDigi has reduced its highest 1Gbps fibre broadband offering by another RM40/month for new customers. This comes just 7 months after the telco revised its fibre broadband offering following the implementation of the new Mandatory Standard of Access Pricing (MSAP) last year.
CelcomDigi has also discontinued its 50Mbps and 800Mbps plans, reducing its total new fibre broadband options from six to just four. The monthly subscription for 100Mbps, 300Mbps and 500Mbps, remains unchanged.
CelcomDigi’s 1Gbps standalone fibre broadband offering was previously going for RM289/month and it is now going for RM249/month, which is a RM40/month reduction. The plan comes with a free Premium WiFi 6 router, mesh node and standard installation.
As usual, the fibre broadband plans are tied to a 24-month contract period.
However, if you sign up for the fibre broadband plan as an existing CelcomDigi Postpaid customer, you can enjoy additional perks. The 1Gbps fibre broadband plan can be yours for RM239/month as part of CelcomDigi’s RM10 monthly rebate (RM240 in total) during the contract period.
CelcomDigi Fibre 1Gbps offers 1Gbps download and 500Mbps upload (Updated).
[ UPDATE 6/06/2024 21:20 ] CelcomDigi has updated that its 1Gbps fibre plan offers 500Mbps upload.
According to CelcomDigi’s FAQ, the 1Gbps plan from Celcom only offers an upload speed of 200Mbps 500Mbps. It also added that all CelcomDigi FIbre plans are running on private dynamic IP.
As a comparison, both Maxis and TM Unifi are also currently offering their 1Gbps fibre broadband plan for RM249/month and both provide a higher 500Mbps for upload. If you’re residing in an area with Time fibre coverage, their 1Gbps plan is going for RM199/month and it also offers an upload speed of 500Mbps.

If you’re staying in a rented home, Time has introduced new fibre broadband options with a shorter 12-month contract. Unlike its previous “No contract” option which requires a one-time upfront payment, the new 12-month option has a lower barrier to entry as Time is providing free WiFi 6 router and installation.
Time Fibre Broadband 12-month contract
According to Time, finding a broadband plan with a contract period that matches rental agreements can be tricky and the new shorter 12-month plan aims to match perfectly with yearly rental leases. This helps consumers enjoy uninterrupted internet throughout their tenure and avoid the risk of paying hefty termination fees if they need to terminate.
Typically, most fibre broadband providers would make you pay the full subscription fees for the remaining months if you cancel before the end of the contract.
On a 12-month contract, Time’s 200Mbps fibre plan costs RM119/month while the 600Mbps plan costs RM159/month. The highest option available is 1Gbps that’s going for RM219/month.
The 200Mbps plan has an upload speed of 200Mbps, while the 600Mbps and 1Gbps plans offer 500Mbps uploads. If you need to relocate to a new address, Time offers free relocation once you’ve finished your 12-month contract.
All three plan options come with a free WiFi 6 router, while the 1Gbps option comes with an additional WiFi 6 Mesh worth RM599.
Comparison versus 24-month and contract-less option
If we compare the 12-month contract versus the 24-month contract, you are essentially paying an additional RM20 per month. On the standard 24-month fibre broadband contract offering, the 200Mbps plan is going for RM99/month while the 600Mbps plan is offered for RM139/month. Meanwhile, the 1Gbps plan is going for RM199/month and the higher 2Gbps option is going for RM379/month.
However, if you go with the “No contract” option, you can enjoy the same low monthly subscription as the 24-month plan. However, you are required to fork out between RM400 to RM800 for one-time installation charges and equipment.
If we do the math (excluding applicable taxes), a 12-month subscription for 200Mbps on the “No contract” option will cost you RM1,588 inclusive of monthly fees and a one-time charge. But on the new 12-month contract option, the total cost for 12 months would be RM1,428, which is RM160 cheaper.
Of course, the best value is to go with a 24-month contract if you’re able to do so with your current accommodation.
For more info, you can visit Time’s official website and check out their 12-month plan FAQ.
Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN), a wireless broadband service by the state government, will soon introduce a home prepaid plan which offers a generous 200GB of data for as low as RM5 per week. The plan is targeted at households residing in rural and remote areas of Sarawak.
The new service enhancement by Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) is expected to launch on 7th July and users will receive 300MB of free data each month. To continue using the service, MySRBN users can pay RM5 per week for 200GB or RM20 per month for 1TB of data.
Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the new service is expected to enable more individuals in rural areas of Sarawak to enjoy high-speed access in line with the state government’s aspiration to create a more inclusive and digitally connected Sarawak.
He said with other service providers, users would typically have to pay a monthly fee of RM70. He added that the price difference of RM50 is subsidised by SDEC, reflecting the state government’s commitment to enhance connectivity in digital areas. Julaihi also shared that SDEC will also provide free installation of routers and antennas to approved applicants.
Launched in 2021, MySRBN is said to have expanded to cover 490 rural areas and 19,668 premises in the state. It is claimed that SDEC has received about 1,500 to 2,000 registrations each month for the service.
The installation requires an outdoor antenna unit and an indoor WiFi router unit. In terms of coverage, it is provided via the state-driven SMART towers. The MySRBN coverage includes rural areas of Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Mukah, Sarikei, Betong, Sibu, Bintulu, Kapit, Miri and Limbang.
When it was launched, the MySRBN service was offered free of charge until further notice. The fixed wireless broadband service provides unlimited access up to 30Mbps.
Malaysians residing in Sarawak within MySRBN coverage areas can apply for the service by downloading the MySDEC app and registering a new line. You can learn more about MySRBN on their official website.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a statement following recent reports that Malaysian Internet Service Providers (ISP) had quietly forced all internet traffic to their local DNS servers. As reported earlier, several ISPs have implemented Transparent DNS Proxy, which prevents Malaysian users from accessing blocked sites even if they use alternative DNS such as Google Public DNS and Cloudflare.
MCMC enhances DNS management for user protection
The MCMC says it has been given a mandate to regulate the communications industry to protect citizens including restricting access to harmful content. It said that blocking of websites has been implemented as a mechanism to protect users under the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA 1998) along with other jurisdictions of enforcement agencies such as the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living and the Securities Commission.
95.7% of the blocked websites include online gambling, pornography, copyright infringement, online scams and prostitution. The regulator added that the restriction of access to websites can curb various crimes including human trafficking, child abduction, and sale of prohibited items such as drugs as well as organised crimes.
Access to blocked websites is redirected to local DNS despite using Google DNS on Maxis
The regulator said to ensure the restriction of such websites remains effective and in line with current technology developments, the MCMC has collaborated closely with local ISPs to further improve and strengthen prevention and protection measures including the aspect of Domain Name System (DNS) management. It said that the cooperation between the MCMC and ISPs is meant to ensure a safer online environment and to ensure safety for all users.
The regular said their action was in line with the 10 National Policy Goals under CMA 1998 which include guaranteeing information security, trust and network integrity. It said the effort requires a holistic “whole of nation” approach from all walks of life to bypass the protection mechanism which could harm individuals including families and children.
From the statement, the MCMC has acknowledged that additional measures have been introduced to enhance censorship and blocking of harmful websites. However, there’s no mention when this directive was issued to the all telco and broadband providers in Malaysia. It has been alleged that Malaysian ISPs were instructed to block public DNS as early as February.
Transparent DNS Proxy intercepts traffic and redirects to local IP
Following the report by Sinar Project, we verified the claims by testing several blocked websites on several ISPs while using Google and Cloudflare DNS. We noticed that the forced redirection to local DNS was in effect for Time, Maxis, U Mobile, CelcomDigi and Unifi. As shown above, our traffic to a blocked website was directed to 175.139.42.25, an IP used to redirect traffic for websites under MCMC’s blacklist.
MCMC has blocked over 20,000 websites in the past 5 years
Websites blocked by MCMC from 2020 until 1st August 2024
According to the regulator, they have blocked over 20,000 websites since 2020. Over 10,000 sites were blocked between 1st January 2022 and 1st August 2024 which include 4,482 online gambling websites, 3,271 pornography websites, 1,654 websites with copyright infringement violations, 316 scams and illegal investment websites, and 249 for online prostitution.
While the MCMC has increased its blocking mechanism, there are still several workarounds to bypass which include enabling Secure DNS (DNS over TLS or DNS over HTTPS) and VPN.
The latest move has raised concerns and criticism as it could be seen as potential censorship and restriction of freedom of speech if such measures were to be abused. The MCMC has made controversial moves in the past to block websites including MalaysiaKini’s Undi.info, Sarawak Report and Medium.

Add extra WiFi 7 Mesh nodes from RM19/month
To enjoy the full potential of WiFi 7, it is recommended that you switch to newer hardware that can support WiFi 7. If you need to expand the WiFi coverage at home, Time is also allowing users to add more WiFi 7 Mesh nodes from RM19/month.
According to their device page, you can add a single WiFi 7 mesh node at RM19/month, two nodes at RM35/month and three notes at RM47/month.
TM has announced an update on the Unifi service degradation issue caused by a submarine cable fault. The issue has caused sluggish internet connection and slower browsing experience for Unifi broadband customers since the long holiday weekend.
As of 6pm this evening, TM says they have observed a stable trend and increased capacity after they rerouted traffic through alternative connections while optimising the network capacity to manage the increased load. It added that its remedial works are expected to address the internet service experience issues affecting its customers.

What a year it has been for Malaysian telcos. We saw mobile and internet plan prices come down while data quota and internet speed increased. Staying connected has never been cheaper. That being said, we also saw telcos introducing more variations of their products, increasing the options for consumers like you and us. So the question now becomes: Which plan has the best offering?
To help you choose the best mobile and internet plan that fits your budget and needs, the tech experts at SoyaCincau.com, consisting of Alex, Hanif, Chapree, Putra, Sam, Aisyah, and Duke, have curated a list of the best mobile and internet plan released in 2024 and awarded them Gold, Silver, or Bronze.
Naturally, we had to define some parameters to help narrow down our nominees. Therefore, only plans launched between 20th November 2023 and 1st November 2024 were considered.
Now without further ado, we present, SoyaCincau Awards 2024: The Best Telcos of the Year:
One rare feature that the Uni5G Wow 35 plan offers that’s rarely seen in other telcos is data rollover, a feature that allows you to bring forward your unused data to the following month.
But doesn’t Uni5G Wow 35 come with unlimited data without speed throttling? So what’s the need to roll over your data? That’s where it gets interesting. What you will be rolling over isn’t the unused data, but the unused Fair Usage Policies (FUP).
Uni5G Wow has 50GB of FUP for 4G/5G or just 5G only. If you don’t finish using it by the end of the month, it will be brought forward to the following month.
Let’s say you have 40GB of 4G/5G FUP data balance, you will get that 40GB of data from the previous month once your next quota refresh takes place, together with the new month’s 50GB, totalling 90GB of data. The rollover feature is also valid for monthly data hotspot quotas. In the case of the Uni5G Wow 35, you get 10GB of monthly hotspot quota.
However, there’s one crucial piece of information that’s missing here. What is the limit for data that can be rolled over? That isn’t stated in Unifi’s FAQ. On top of data rollover, the Uni5G Wow 35 plan also offers unlimited calls.
With this unique offering from Unifi in 2024, we award the Uni5G Wow 35 plan with the Bronze medal in the Prepaid of the Year category.
When Yoodo was still around, it offered 20GB for RM20 and when the promo ended, you still got 30GB for just RM20, which is still great value for money. Now that it’s gone, it’s got a new successor, albeit an indirect one, from Hotlink, bearing the torch it once carried by offering 60GB for just RM25.
Out of the 60GB of data, you get 30GB for 4G/5G, while there’s also an ongoing promo that offers an additional 30GB exclusively for 5G. When the promo ends, you still get 30GB for just RM20, which is great value for money.
Technically speaking, CelcomDigi does provide some interesting offerings too, but they are not clearly listed up front. You will need to dig through their FAQ and TNC to find them. They are advertising just two out of tenths of great plans as if they are trying to only popularise these two plans. Why CelcomDigi? Customers are supposed to be given the choice to make their own decisions right?
Due to Hotlink’s interesting offerings and their transparency, we award them with the Silver medal for the Prepaid of the Year category.
In our opinion, the CelcomDigi SpeadStream series of plans offer the best value for money for users in 2024. Therefore it deserves to be the Gold medalist for the Prepaid Plan for the Year category.
That’s because, in a single package, you get to pick one streaming service – Disney+ Hotstar, iQiyi, or Viu. We’ve decided to pick the RM59 option as it includes Disney+ Hotstar, a streaming service that’s more universal.
The base price of Disney+ Hotstar is RM24.90. So, if we subtract RM24.90 from the plan price of RM59, we get RM34.10. At this price, you get 65GB of high-speed internet. When the quota is fully used up, you get 200GB of 12Mbps internet instead. Also included is 15GB of mobile hotspot and unlimited calls.
Isn’t all of these worth the money? What other plans offer such value?
Learn more about the Celcom Speedstream plans here.
Postpaid Plan of the Year
Bronze: Yes Power 35
For just RM35, the Yes Power 35 postpaid plan offers a whopping 150GB of 4G and 5G data with no speed cap. On top of that, you can utilise the 150GB quota for hotspot usage and it comes with unlimited calls to all networks. For extra savings, you can add on a Sooka subscription for as little as RM25/month.
On top of that, Yes 5G now lets you add 999GB of data for just RM1. So that’s a lot of data for not so much money. Yes Power 35 deserves the Bronze award for having a clear-cut budget postpaid plan with a generous amount of data and a discounted video streaming bundle.
Silver: Hotlink Postpaid 70
Taking second place is Hotlink Postpaid 70 plan at RM70 a month. This postpaid plan offers 300GB of data (150GB 4G/5G + Bonus 150GB 5G) which covers hotspot usage. There’s no speed cap and it also comes with unlimited calls to all networks.
As an added bonus, the postpaid plan offers free data roaming in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. This means you can enjoy up to 300GB data for roaming which is great if you travel often to our neighbouring countries.
Gold: U Mobile Family 128
Finally, the Gold Award for the best postpaid plan goes to U Mobile Family 128. This is the perfect postpaid plan if you want loads of data for your family and free roaming. For RM128/month, nothing beats this family postpaid plan in terms of value as you can get a total of 4 SIMs with shared 1,000GB of data and unlimited calls to all networks.
In addition, U Mobile also provides free 15GB of data roaming in 63 countries which is shared among the four SIMs. On top of that, U Mobile even provides free incoming calls while you roam in the 63 countries, so you won’t have to worry about bill shocks if you answer a call while travelling overseas.
If you do the math, the U Mobile Family 128 plan costs just RM32 per line per month, with a shared quota of 1000GB. The plan is certainly a no-brainer for families with a huge appetite for mobile data.
Broadband Plan of the Year
Bronze: Time 200Mbps
Time has up the ante by offering double the speed at no extra cost. Its base RM99/month 100Mbps plan is now offering 200Mbps download and upload speeds which is currently the best value for money entry-level fibre plan in Malaysia.
For greater flexibility for renters, Time now offers its fibre broadband plans with multiple options including 12-month and no contract.
For users who can’t install fibre, Yes 5G Wireless Broadband is one of the best alternatives in Malaysia. Leveraging DNB’s 5G network with 80% population coverage, it offers unlimited 5G data with uncapped speeds and a free router for only RM99/month on a 24-month contract.
The telco has recently upgraded its wireless 5G router, while existing Yes 5G postpaid users can sign up for the wireless 5G broadband plan for just RM75/month.
For greater peace of mind, Yes 5G also offers a 7-day return policy where customers can cancel and return the router if they are not satisfied with the experience.
U Mobile takes the top spot this year as the telco offers the best value for money wireless 5G broadband service. U Mobile’s U Home 5G broadband plan now bundles a free WiFi 6 5G router on a 24-month contract for only RM68/month.
Although U Home 5G’s “unlimited” plan comes with a 1000GB FUP, users can easily add on 1TB of data for only RM30/month.
On top of that, U Home 5G subscribers can add on Sooka Premium with a discount or add on a Samsung 4K TV from as little as RM65/month on contract.
Unifi retains its position as a convergence telco covering home fibre broadband, mobile and video content. Besides having the largest fibre footprint in the country, the provider’s Unifi TV offering provides access to over 10 streaming platforms for one single price.
The telco has also refreshed its mobile offering with more data, while its prepaid offering has been upgraded with data rollover and uncapped speeds. In terms of coverage, Unifi has also expanded its footprint by tapping into Maxis’ infrastructure via MOCN sharing and domestic roaming agreements.
Two years after the merger, CelcomDigi has revamped its product lineup with unified plans across Prepaid, Postpaid and Fibre. The telco has increased its value proposition with more data and a variety of mobile plan options and content/data add-ons to cater to different users.
CelcomDigi is also the first provider to offer Fibre-To-The-Room in Malaysia and they are the only telco to offer FTTR for free on contract with its 1Gbps home fibre bundle.
When it comes to the network, it is still undergoing a massive network modernisation exercise to integrate existing sites under Celcom and Digi. It aims to hit 75% completion by the end of this year with the end goal of having 18,000 5G-ready sites by 2025.
Maxis Postpaid plans priced from RM109 are now upgraded with unlimited data, while its Hotlink Prepaid and Postpaid Plans at RM35/month now come with 100GB of data. What stood out the most is the simplicity of the plans with clear and upfront information about applicable speeds and the Fair Usage Policy for its prepaid plans, to help customers make informed decisions.
Besides offering fibre broadband options from 100Mbps to 2Gbps, Maxis offers an extensive list of device bundle options covering all major phones including Apple, Samsung, and Google Pixel, as well as smart home appliances, and PS5 and 4K TV bundles. In terms of network, Maxis remains one of the most consistent and most reliable in Malaysia, as verified by Opensignal.

In about 3 weeks, the ageing Streamyx “broadband” service will be shut down for good after almost 24 years in service. TM has put out a notice that the copper-based ADSL service will no longer be available starting 28th February 2025 and remaining users are reminded to migrate to faster and more reliable fibre internet.
TM has stopped accepting new Streamyx registrations since 2022 as part of its process to migrate users to fibre broadband. The Streamyx service which provide download speeds of up to 8Mbps is practically obsolete in this day and age considering most internet users can enjoy faster and cheaper services over 4G and 5G. Meanwhile, new fibre broadband plans now offer at least 100Mbps for less than RM100.
According to TM’s official notice, they won’t be able to fix any problems with the copper network after 28th February 2025. To ensure uninterrupted internet access, customers are recommended to upgrade to Unifi broadband which offers better speed and reliability. It added that failure to do so may result in the termination of your Unifi Lite or Streamyx service.
If you’re still on Streamyx, TM says you can be migrated within 14 business days if you’re residing in an area with existing fibre infrastructure. However, if your location is out of TM’s fibre infrastructure coverage, it may take longer ranging from 30 to 180 business days.
Users can migrate through the Selfcare portal or the MyUnifi app, or visit the nearest Unifi Store or TMpoint.
Alternatively, users can consider getting a wireless 5G broadband solution. TM currently offers Unifi Air 5G which provides unlimited 5G with WiFi 6 router for RM149/month.
Less than 280,000 Streamyx customers in Q4 2021
As announced by TM in 2022, it aims to migrate all Streamyx users to Unifi Fibre Broadband by 2025. As of Q4 2021, there were only 278,000 Streamyx customers remaining, which is a 50% drop from Q4 2020 when it had 557,000 Streamyx customers.
According to TM’s Q3 2024 report, they currently have over 3.1 million Unifi Home Broadband subscribers.
